Grades 1 and 2:

Language literacy (formal teaching of reading and writing) and numeracy are in English while the rest of the curriculum will remain bilingual

Grade 3:

The introduction of formal teaching of reading and writing in Afrikaans as the first additional language

Grades 4 - :

Bilingual classes where parents choose the language of preference for textbooks, tests and examinations. Both English and Afrikaans will be used in class.

Motivation /Motivering:

  • It is an educationally sound practice to establish the foundation of literacy and numeracy in one language before introducing a second language.  As this process takes place during Grades one and two, the language of learning and teaching will be English during those two years at this stage.

  • The feasibility of offering one language or another is determined specifically by the demand for that language.
